Professional Door Lock Hardware For Your Home in Fredericksburg, VA

Door locks do two things at once: they keep a door secure and contribute to your home’s aesthetic. Most homeowners think about style first and function second, but function determines what you actually need on each door before style comes into play. Getting that part right first makes everything else easier to choose.

FXBG Keys LLC installs residential door locks across Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Stafford, Culpeper, and Thornburg, Virginia. We help you determine which type of lock each door needs, source the necessary parts, and install them correctly.

Door Lock Hardware For Your Home

Residential door locks (clockwise from top right): deadbolt & thumb latch handle, doorknob lock & matching deadbolt, door with smart lock above a deadbolt and thumb latch handle, and a keyed doorknob.

Call us today for all your home’s door lock hardware needs. We can install, repair, and replace all types of locks on your home’s interior and exterior doors, including single locks, matched sets, and smart locks.

Your home has multiple doors with different security and usability needs. Depending on your security, design, and accessibility needs, we can install keyed locks, as well as matching non-locking knobs and levers, on doors that don’t require keyed locking.

  • Keyed Knobs/Levers and Deadbolts: For doors that require a high level of security, including exterior doors, home offices, basement doors, and any other room that needs to be secured. High-security models are available if you want an extra level of protection.
  • Privacy Knobs/Levers: Essential for bathrooms and bedrooms, these knobs feature a button or turn-lock and can be unlocked with the included flat metal emergency/privacy key.
  • Passage Knobs/Levers: For interior doors that need to latch but not lock, such as hallways, closets, and living areas. They operate freely from both sides with no locking mechanism.
  • Dummy Knobs/Levers: Surface-mounted, no-latch, non-turning knobs and levers used for pantry and closet doors.

Knob, Lever, and Handleset Locks

Knob locks are the traditional option and work well on any door where a classic look fits the space. Knobs are also easier to childproof than levers, so they’re a good choice when you have curious little ones that love to explore. Lever locks operate with a simple push-down motion rather than a grip-and-turn, which makes them easier for anyone with limited hand strength and more ergonomic when your hands are full.

Typically used on exterior doors, handlesets include a decorative handle with a thumb latch and a matching deadbolt, giving the entrance a more finished, architectural look than a standard knob or lever. If you want two keyed locks for added security, you can choose a handleset with a lock on the thumblatch. The interior side of the handle will have a doorknob or lever.

Deadbolts: An Extra Layer of Security For Your Home

Doorknob locks provide a base level of security for exterior doors, but we always recommend a deadbolt for extra security. Deadbolts operate independently of the knob or lever, are key-operated on the outside and thumbturn-operated on the inside. They have a solid 1 to 1.5-inch-long bolt that extends deep into the door frame, making it significantly harder to force than a doorknob lock spring latch. On most exterior doors, the deadbolt sits above the knob or lever and typically uses the same key as the knob or lever lock.

Most residential deadbolts are single-cylinder, keyed from the outside with a thumbturn on the inside. Double-cylinder deadbolts require a key on both sides, which adds security on glass-panel doors, but they can slow egress and are restricted in some locations.

If we’re replacing an old or damaged deadbolt or installing a new one on a door that didn’t already have one, we offer these two door lock services for residential customers:

  • Lock Rekeying: We can rekey a new deadbolt to use the same key as the knob lock, or vice versa.
  • Smart Lock Installation: If you’re in the market for a new or replacement deadbolt, we can install a smart lock deadbolt for added convenience.

Mortise Locks

residential mortise lock

Mortise locks offer high security and durability and come in a wide range of styles and finishes to match your design preferences. We can also pair them with a matching smart lock deadbolt for added security.

Mortise locks differ from standard tubular or cylindrical hardware because the entire lock mechanism sits inside a recessed pocket cut into the door edge, rather than passing through bore holes in the door face. That internal mounting makes them more resistant to forced entry and better suited to heavy, solid doors. They’re common in older homes built before tubular hardware became standard, and they’re also found in higher-end new construction where the specification calls for something more substantial.

Replacing or restoring mortise hardware requires precise fitting, the right mortise case dimensions, and familiarity with how the lock body, spindle, faceplate, and trim work together. It’s not a hardware-store swap. Our lock installation and repair service covers mortise lock work on both older and newer homes, and we can advise on whether existing hardware is worth restoring or a full replacement makes more sense.

Home Door Hardware Services FAQs

What does residential door hardware include?

Residential door hardware includes the parts that help a door open, close, latch, lock, and provide secure access to the home. This can include a door knob, lever, keyed locks, privacy hardware, latch parts, and other door hardware used on entry doors and interior doors. The right set depends on the lock type, the door, and how you want the hardware to fit your home’s style and needs.

Can you install new door hardware on my home?

Yes. We install residential door hardware for many types of doors, whether you want to replace worn parts, upgrade security, or choose a new style for your home. We can help you find options that fit the door correctly, work with the right lock type, and provide the level of access, privacy, and security you need.

Can all my keyed locks be set to the same key?

In many cases, yes. If the lock type and brand are compatible, we can often set multiple keyed locks to work with the same key, which makes access easier around the home. This is a popular option for homeowners who want one key for several doors instead of carrying a different key for each lock.

What is the difference between a door knob and a lever?

A door knob uses a round grip, while a lever has a handle that pushes down to open the door. Both can work well depending on the style of the home, the type of door hardware, and how the door will be used. Some homeowners choose a lever for convenience and easier access, while others prefer the look and charm of a traditional door knob.

Do you work on more than just locks?

Yes. Door hardware is more than just the lock itself, and we work on many parts that affect how the door functions. Depending on the project, that can include the latch, knob, lever, keyed hardware, privacy hardware, and other pieces that need to fit together correctly so the door works smoothly and stays secure.

Can you help me choose the right door hardware for my home?

Yes. We can help you choose door hardware based on function, style, finishes, materials, and how the door is used. Some homeowners want a more secure entry setup, while others want hardware that matches the beauty and charm of the home, fits the brand they prefer, and works well with the rest of the space. We help you learn the options so you can find the right fit for your needs.

Do you install mortise locks and specialty hardware?

Yes, in some cases. Mortise hardware uses a different lock type and door prep than a standard door knob or lever set, so it is important to confirm the existing setup before installation. We can inspect the door, the hardware opening, and the overall project to see what options will work best.

Can you replace old door hardware without changing the whole door?

Yes. In many cases, we can install new door hardware on the existing door as long as the fit, lock type, and hardware layout are compatible. Replacing a worn lock, latch, knob, lever, or keyed set can be a practical way to improve access, update style, and make the home feel more secure without turning it into a larger project.

What should I consider when choosing residential door hardware?

It helps to think about how the door is used, whether you need keyed locks or privacy hardware, what style you want, and which finishes or materials best match the home. You should also consider function, security, brand preference, and whether you want more than one lock set to the same key. The right choice depends on your needs, the type of door, and the look you want to create.
